1. What is the first thing you drink in the morning?

Filtered alkaline water with freshly squeezed lemon juice.

2. What was your favorite jewelry piece to design outof all the ones you have done? Why?

A beautiful pendant with a large white South Sea baroque pearl as the centerpiece. This unique free-form shaped pearl was a great find for me and my mother on a gem shopping trip in the Philippines many years ago, so it held special sentimental value for me. My design complemented the white baroque pearl’s intrinsic beauty with a vibrant palette of amethysts, citrines and tourmalines. I loved designing this piece as it brought back treasured memories of all the moments that I shared with my mother appreciating exquisite jewels, and I know she would have cherished this one-of-a-kind piece that was inspired by her loving memory.

3. What song would be the anthem of your design process?

Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars.

4. What advice do you have for others entering your profession?

Stay true to your aesthetic vision, but keep learning with an open mind, be perseverant, and design pieces you love, because your passion will be conveyed through your jewelry and felt by others.

5. As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration from?

When I was young, I used to play with my mother’s vast jewelry collection, enchanted by the sparkling stones and luminous pearls. We went gem shopping all over the world, and my mother taught me, among other things, about Burmese pigeon blood rubies, emeralds from Colombia’s Muzo mines, translucent Imperial jade, natural pearls, and the importance of quality over size. The fond memories of these wonderful lessons and trips, and my ongoing love of travel, where I immerse myself in diverse cultures and search for alluring gemstones, still inspire me today. I am also inspired by art and its imaginative forces, by the beauty of the imperfections in nature that reveal the history of creation, and by the magnificent gemstones that are created through this process of nature, each with its own unique character.

6. If you could meet anyone in the world, who do you want to meet? And why?

Melinda Gates. I really admire the incredible work of the Gates Foundation, and her leading global role in reducing poverty, enhancing education, addressing women’s issues, and saving lives in developing countries. The work of their Global Health Division to improve health and combat infectious diseases is an area close to my heart, as under my father’s leadership as the head of the World Health Organization’s Asia-Pacific region, polio was eradicated for 1.5 billion of the world’s population in his region twenty years ago. His team also developed the bed nets, treated with insecticide to protect from mosquito bites, that are used today by the Gates Foundation in Africa and South Asia to combat malaria. Melinda Gates’ goal of making a meaningful difference to better lives for all of humanity is truly inspiring.

7. What kind of person wears JH Jewelry?

A woman who is confident, stylish, appreciates fine quality, values traditions but has a modern perspective, and enjoys expressing her individuality through one-of-a-kind JOON HAN jewelry pieces that exhibit her unique personality.
